4.0 out of 5 starsGreat Product OverallApril 30, 2012
By Katie Lou

My boyfriend bought me a Rug Doctor as a Christmas gift in 2011 because I had been borrowing carpet cleaners from friends for the past few years. I have two dogs and a 6-year-old so my carpets need cleaned pretty regularly and it's too expensive to pay to have them professionally cleaned once a month. At first, I was less than thrilled with it. It only moves backward (there are no front wheels), the handle is too short and it hurts my back to hunch over it, and the reserve tank is way smaller than I was used to (I have to fill it up on average about 3 times to do my average-sized living room). After using various other brands (Bissell & Hoover) I was also annoyed that it didn't have all the bells and whistles of the other ones (heated water, a water only option, various heat/brush settings, etc).Turns out, this machine doesn't really need all the fancy settings. It does a FANTASTIC job. I have shag-style carpets that collect dog hair, kid messes, dirt, bugs, and all the other junk you track in your house on a daily basis and my Rug Doctor made them look nearly new. It also extracts a significant portion of the water which helps them dry more quickly. I will sometimes run the machine back over a patch I have just cleaned to make sure it got all the water out and very rarely do I get more than a sprinkle coming through the hose into the collection tank. I've loaned it out to a friend and a family member and they were both really pleased with their results, too. I do wish it had front wheels and a larger water tank (I also wish my BF would have sprung for the wide track version, but I can't complain), but other than those two issues, I have been very happy with this product and would highly recommend it to friends or family.PROS:1. Cleans VERY well2. Easy to assemble. Doesn't have a lot of extraneous parts to mess with.3. Carpets dry quickly4. Doesn't take up a lot of space5. Easy to fill and empty6. Cleaning products are reasonably priced7. You only have to make one pass over your carpet to clean and extract unlike other models where you have to do one pass to put down the water/solution and another pass to suck it up.8. The cord is long enough to allow you to cover a whole room without switching outlets.CONS:1. Somewhat difficult to maneuver (since you can only move it one direction)2. Lacks different settings3. Short handle4. Small water tank5. Cost (I didn't have to pay for mine, but if I had bought one on my own, I probably would have gone with a cheaper Hoover/Bissell. I think my boyfriend paid almost $500 for mine and it was refurbished).6. It's REALLY loud7. There is no water level indicator light. You have to listen for the specific noise it makes when the reserve tank is empty.8. Doesn't heat the water. You have to put in warm/hot water in the tank.Despite the CONS, I would still recommend this product to someone who has to clean their carpets on a regular basis. It really does do a great job (way better than the other brands I have used). And even with the up front investment, it will save you lots of money in the long run paying for professional carpet cleaning.
