4.0 out of 5 starsGood strong vacuum for the money.November 28, 2012

Let me start by saying that this a competent vacuum. It's suction is good, it's not too heavy for my wife to use, the usability seems well thought out and it's simple to use and maintain. Definitely not the "Cadillac" of vacuums, but a good, solid Chevy. I agree with those who say that it's not very effective on bare floors but, hey, that's what canister vacuums are for. But get this vacuum onto your carpets and rugs, and you'll see where this baby shines. It almost seems too aggressive with our carpet at times, but it sure gets it clean. Even on the "highest" carpet setting it beats our berber carpet up pretty good, laboring at times to keep its beater brush spinning. But wow, it does its job and cleans deeply. I do worry that it'll go through belts or labor the motor too much. Hoover engineers need to work on that one. It's not the quietest vacuum but then again, this ain't no prima dona vac. With the handle folded down it fits in just about any space, and easily snaps back up in an instant and is ready to go.Yeah, you'll get some dust about when you empty it, just like other bag-less vacs, so empty it into the garbage can and not the kitchen trash. It's bright headlight helps you make sure you're not missing anything, but if you go over something with this vac, it's gone. There are a couple of well-placed handles low down on the unit, which makes it easy to do stairs. One really nice feature is that, when you remove the hose to get the corners or use the crevice tool, a spring-loaded door directs 100% of the suction through the hose, and there's a ton of suction for cleaning corners and dusting. But it's not perfect. The cord needs to be about five feet longer. It's the shortest cord I've had on a vacuum. The well thought-out aspects such as the wide head, light weight and folding handle lose their luster when I need to keep re-plugging so much. I clean the canister and the filter screen after every use, because the stainless pre-screen for the HEPA filter traps a lot of fine lint. But I have to clean the clothes dryer screen after each load too. Not a problem. Also, it's kind of a pain to put the vac back into its full upright position. You shouldn't need to step on the handle release pedal to do this.Overall, this is a good and well engineered vacuum that I would purchase again.
