5.0 out of 5 starsBest Vacuum Ever - PeriodDecember 7, 2006
By Jay
Before we bought this vacuum more than a year ago, I read the reviews of many vacuums. The Hoover Self Propelled vacuum was originally my first choice since it scored well with Consumer Reports until I visited the local specialty vacuum shop. I told the salesperson I was looking for a vacuum under $300 that performed well while at the same time was close to commercial quality. They pointed me to the Sanitaire S647 with no hesitation. Keep in mind that they had many other brands of vacuums they could have recommended. The Sanitaire vacuum is ugly and does not have any attachment accessories, but it deep cleans carpets VERY well, and is easy to maintain. The 840 watt motor is the same as the motor used in the commercial line, but the warranty for the the residential blue line is longer (2 years total warranty). The 30 foot cord is very handy. I have been very satisfied with this vacuum over the 14+ months I've used it. We have a young son, so we vacuum almost every other day since he'll put the tiniest lint into his mouth. Here's another example of how great this vacuum is. The Kirby person came by and gave us his typical demonstration with their $2000 vacuum. He set the vacuum to the lowest setting so that it was as close to the floor as possible, and even had the paper thin filter so that he could show us how dirty our carpet was. To his surprise, all his vacuumed picked up was carpet fibers, NOT dust or sand under the carpet pad. Then I thought of another test. I vacuumed a high traffic area with my Sanitaire first, and he vacuumed over it with his $2000 vacuum afterwards. Again, he only picked up a few carpet fibers after going over the area over and over, and very slowly. This was probably due to the paper thin filter the Kirby guy used in lieu of a regular bag.Well, in short, this vacuum is well worth it. When I bought it, they threw in the Sanitaire canister vacuum which had the usual attachments for hardwood (very handy), stairs, crevices, etc. The upright vacuum has the best performance I've seen. I'm a geek, so it prides me to see the commercial line widely used in hotels, casinos, office buildings, etc. If you pay attention, you too will notice the red commercial line used everywhere.Update: (April 4, 2008)My Sanitaire S647 is still going strong. My wife and I vacuum everyday because we now have two toddlers. For maintenance, I replace the belt and bag at least 3 times a year, which cost about $10 in materials total. Not bad for 1-year worth of maintenance and the parts are readily available at the local vacuum shop. Keep in mind that this vacuum has been around for many many years and parts are still readily available. Could you say the same for these newer vacuums? And no, I'm not a Sanitaire salesperson.
