My parents and grandparents owned Kirby vacs. They were clunky, loud, overpriced, needed repeated repairs, and my $200 Panasonic picked up better. I've used Panasonic (cool features but didn't last long) and Hoover bagless (worked well but a mess to empty & clean filters on). When my Hoover's accessory hose stopped working, I decided to look for a better machine before paying for a repair.The Miele is the exact opposite of what I'm used to, but all of it's touted benefits (near-silent operation, self-sealing filtered bags, low clearance, etc) appealed to me. I wasn't too hot on the price, but I've probably spent that much on vacuums in the last 12 years. I haven't had it long enough to testify to its reliability, but I can vouch for its functionality. I still have to get used to the Capricorn dragging behind me, but I've found it great at following me around. On carpet it follows reasonably smoothly, on hardwood you hardly notice it's there.As to cleaning: I've been able to vacuum pine needles out of small rugs since I can stand on the rug and vacuum in a way an upright would never allow. The smell I've always associated with vacuuming is missing with this machine. I no longer need my broom or dustpan as this does a better job anyway. I ended up ordering the "Cat & Dog Kit", even though I don't have pet, since it has a smaller (air-powered) brush that's great for stairs & upholstery as well as a longer crevice tool to reach behind furniture.If you have allergies, hate cleaning out a bagless, can't handle the weight of uprights, or have a lot of higher cleaning (ceiling fans, high shelves, curtains), definitely consider a Miele. Even the cheaper ones can't be much worse. If money's an issue, you can always do like I did & buy it with an Amazon card & pay it off in 12 months with no interest.
