You can use the Dyson like a canister vacuum by pulling out the hose, reversing the wand, and attaching the floor tool. The little tools that come with the yellow Dyson are OK for chairs and window sills, but the so-called stair tool is too wimpy for wide stairs. For that you need the floor tool. You need the floor tool for vacuuming under chairs and tables too, because the upright doesn't go flat enough. The 17' hose, 35' power cord, top mounted carrying handle, and easy roll-about rear wheels, make the red Dyson with floor tool as good as any canister. Then simply snap the hose and handle back onto the body, and you have an upright.
If you buy the yellow one, I highly recommend buying the floor tool too (it can be purchased separately). However, I don't think the extra tools that come with the purple one are worth the extra money. The only differences among the three Dysons are the colors, tools, and price.
Suction is excellent with the Dyson upright. It picks up most dirt with one or two strokes. It's very well designed, easy to use, requires no assembly other than mounting the hose/handle combination, and is much lighter than it looks (because of the high-impact plastic construction). I was only disappointed by the noise level. Other reviewers kept praising how quiet it is, but it sounds like a vacuum to me.
If you dislike housework as much as I do, get over the sticker-shock and buy a Dyson. It will do more with less effort. You won't have to run the vacuum over the same spot again and again, and you will vacuum less often because it picks up so much.
